Karnataka ministers caught surfing porn claim they were browsing TOI’s Page 3

The material that Lakshman was perusing

The two Karnataka ministers, who were caught on camera allegedly watching a porn clip on a mobile phone in the state assembly, claimed it wasn’t porn but a section of the Bangalore online edition of The Times of India that they were perusing  and having a serious policy discussion over.

“I had left home early today morning and didn’t have the time to read the newspaper. That particular session in the assembly was more boring than any history lecture I’ve ever attended in school. So I decided to open Bangalore Times’ epaper edition on my smartphone to keep er… abreast of latest developments around the world. There was a clipping of a bikini-clad model occupying the top right section of the home page. Unfortunately, the TV channel zoomed in and focused on my phone at that instant!” clarified Lakshman Savadi, minister for co-operation in the Karnataka cabinet.

“I showed the clipping to Mr. C.C.Patil, the minister for women & child development, and pointed out how featuring such stuff in the media sets a bad example for women and children in the state! How ironical that the media has totally misconstrued & misrepresented the story!” he added.

BJP has justified the actions of the ministers saying they were ‘hard at work‘. “Well, it is certainly one way to hold your own in the assembly,” said BJP national spokesperson, Ravi Shankar Prasad. “The hon’ble members must be applauded for the passion they have brought to the House and for standing up for what excites them.” The Congress’ reaction, predictably, was a lot more caustic. Manish Tewari replayed the footage for the press during a briefing and screamed, “Dekhiye! Upar se neeche tak, kis tarah se woh log un ladkiyon ko dekh rahe hain!”

The fate of the two ministers will be decided tomorrow after the issue is debated in the Assembly. Things are not likely to go in their favour, as the other pages in the newspaper only had columns like “10 steps to a healthy sex life”, “Not able to seduce him well ? Here’s what you could do!”, “Scarlett Johansson poses nude for Canadian Magazine”, “Sonam Kapoor may join the bikini brigade” among others.

Meanwhile, The Hindu has released a new set of ads depicting 20 something youth not knowing the answer to ‘Which portfolio does Minister Lakshman Savadi handle in the Karnataka cabinet?’ but immediately answering ‘porn’ to the question ‘What was Lakshman Savadi caught seeing in the Karnataka Assembly recently?’

The unseemly episode, however, has left Karnataka legislators grappling with an intractable dilemma. “If I if switch to perusing The Hindu on the floor of the House, I might end up dozing off. On the other hand, if I browse ToI pages, people will call me a despo. Chae!!” cried BJP MLA, Dodaganesh Pervertappa, explaining his predicament.

  1. On being probed further, the minister explained – “Long term usage of caffeine is bad for the health. But I am not aware of any such study on porn. So we feel porn scores over coffee, as a healthier option to stay stimulated in the assembly.”

  2. Yes it is very difficult to read the online edition of The Times Of India in office. They should keep all the sex related articles in a separate section called sex so that people looking for such articles can read them easily. They should avoid publishing sex related links and images on home page.

  3. Nice article..
After this episode, Karnataka speaker decided that media cameras will not be allowed inside the assembly. My request is can you pls write an article on this?
Its so shameful..instead of being transparent they are trying to conceal ‘actual’ work some politicians do.
