Rupee touches 56.78, India observes historic moment in awe

Awestruck Indians observed a seminal moment in their economic history as their beloved currency, the Indian Rupee touched 56.78 a US Dollar. This exchange rate, a unique combination of successive digits was perceived by many Indians across caste, creed and class lines as an epochal moment with profound metaphysical connotations.

Social networks like Facebook were clogged with status updates and photos carrying the news, with the most-widely shared one reading, “Indian Rupee touches 56.78 per $. This is a rare moment to be witnessed in this lifetime. Please like, share & tag”.

Twitter was no different either, with prolific tweeter and politician Shashi Tharoor receiving a barrage of tweets like, “Sir, Indian Rupee touches magical figure of 56.78, pls RT Sir! pls pls!” and duly re-tweeting each one of them.

Outgoing finance minister and presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee was mighty pleased with the develeopments, saying “Pleash order some roshogullas! Let us shelebrate this hishtoric occasion! I am proud of the nation for completely forgetting my schrew up of the economy and I hail its poshitive attitude for obsherving the magic number!” to loud claps and whistles from the gathering before he was interrupted by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who cleared her throat. “Oh, I’m shorry, madam ji. I would like to shincerely thank Shrimathi Shonia Gandhi ji for strongly encouraging me to fachilitate the Rupee touching such a value!”

Rumour mills were abuzz with astrologers predicting that a sign resembling the rupee symbol would appear on the face of the moon precisely at 6:07:08 pm and would remain there all night. Social networks were once again abuzz with users posting SLR and Instagram photos of the moon, without the symbol, but with the caption “Waiting for the Indian rupee on the moon :)”.

Though astronomers at ISRO tried to fathom the scientific cause of the anticipated phenomenon, they weren’t able to come up with anything. Former ISRO chairman Madhavan Nair, however said “6:07:08 is actually 5 hours 67 minutes and 8 seconds, comprising the digits, which collectively form the current value of the Rupee. I guess that’s how they would’ve arrived at the timing. Now, can I have my job back?”

However, majority of observers were left disappointed as the rupee value fluctuated to 56.88 at 6 pm, before people could let the moment sink in. Astrologers blamed the abrupt fluctuation for mark failing to materialize on the moon. Unconfirmed sources claimed that Nirmal Baba could see the mark, courtesy his “third eye”. However, a still upbeat Pranab Mukherjee assured the nation, saying “Don’t worry, people! The next such moment will be when the Rupee touches 67.89 a dollar. Baat sirf itna hi toh hai, na? Don’t worry, we will ensure that the Rupee value touches that value too, very shoon…err…with the honorable guidanche of Shonia Gandhi ji of course!” receiving a thunderous applause from the gathered politicians.
