Following a rumor that Pakistani cricketers may be cleared to play in the 6th season of the Indian Premier League, the Chennai Super Kings has made proactive moves to sign former skipper Shoaib Malik, with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni inviting Indian tennis champion Sania Mirza to Chennai’s Park Shertaon, where he is currently lodged, for discussions on the subject. After exchanging pleasantries, Dhoni gingerly asked Sania to convince her significant other and former Pakistani captain Shoaib Malik to join CSK.
However, Sania abruptly got up and walked out of the lounge in a huff, leaving Dhoni dazed as though he had fended off a snorter from Dale Steyn. The bemused CSK captain later addressed the media, saying: “Well, of course, you know, I had Sania come over to discuss the possibility of Shoaib Malik joining the Chennai Super Kings, but I don’t know in what condition she was in. She took it wrongly, you know, and said that she’s being humiliated by being used as bait yet again! Given her role in bridging the difference between the Tennis players, I thought she could do the same here. But she walked out after listening to my proposal!”
Feeling slighted after the encounter with the Indian skipper, Sania began drafting the following letter addressed to the BCCI and the IPL governing body:
“I thought Dhoni had called me over to congratulate me for winning the third grand slam of my career but was disillusioned and disappointed to discover that I was once again being used as a bait to lure Shoaib into the CSK net.
While I feel honoured and privileged to be chosen to convince Shoaib to join CSK and not any other IPL team, the tactics employed smack of male chauvinism where a two time Grand Slam champion, who has been India’s number 1 women’s tennis player for almost a decade in singles and doubles, is made to play the role of a courier between her husband and the nation’s cricket board.
I believe I can expect a little more respect from the BCCI and Dhoni than what has been accorded to me even if they did not think it necessary to send me a simple congratulatory message after I had won my second Grand Slam title 3 weeks ago.”
However, before she could complete the rest of the letter, Sania paused and tore the draft to shreds, thanks to the intervention of BCCI president and CSK’s de-facto owner, N Srinivasan.
Following a detailed discussion, a smiling Srinivasan addressed the media, saying, “Everything settled pa. I have met Saniaji and communicated the issue to her as only I can. She has kindly and graciously consented to mediating between Shoaib Malik and CSK management.”
Later, IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla refuted Sania’s allegations that nobody from the cricketing world congratulated her for her grand slam win saying, “But we congratulated Dia Mirza, we thought eshe was eSania’s esister!”
The developments have however greatly upset Shoaib Malik. “CSK should have directly contacted me rather than going through Sania in such a sexist manner. As a proud Pakistani belonging to the 19th century, I find it humiliating to be relegated to the sidelines while Sania is the center of attention,” he wailed.
