In a refreshing departure from the current fad of deriding public figures as under-achievers, India Today has instead done a ‘feel good’, upbeat story focusing on the spectacular overachievements of Rajiv Shukla, the dynamic IPL commissioner.
“Look, this under-achievement theme has been done to death by our rivals and our hunch is that people want to read something more positive. So we decided to profile a public figure who has clearly over-achieved in life and the first name that came to mind was Rajiv Shukla. The guy is IPL commissioner, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, secretary of the All India Congress Committee, and a film producer to boot. He has clearly achieved more than what lesser mortals can hope to achieve even over 2 lifetimes,” said India Today Editor MJ Akbar.
“I know people will think why focus on him when there are others with more impressive credentials such as Sachin, Vishy etc? But when you rank these people on the scale of ratio of achievement to innate talent, Rajiv Shuklaji clearly comes out ahead of the rest by miles, you see,” reasoned Mr. Akbar.
Rajiv Shukla preferred to remain modest about the cover story. “All these achievements are nothing compared to my biggest achievement of being aide to Gandhi family. Take that away and I am zero achiever (sic),” he said.
