According to a secret US diplomatic cable from New Delhi dated 2009 that was released by WikiLeaks, BSP leader Ms. Mayawati had wanted to gift a statue to the United States of America when she was the CM of UP.

The offer was made when Mayawati was casually chatting with the United States ambassador to India, Timothy Reiner, at a luncheon hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at his residence in July 2009 in honor of visiting Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, according to the cable.

According to the cable, Mayawati evinced keen interest in France having gifted the Statue of Liberty to the United States in 1896 as a monument to mark the American war of independence.

To the shock of the envoy, she disclosed that the government of Uttar Pradesh was working on a “Statue of Mayawati” of similar size and dimension, which was to be gifted to the United States on behalf of the people of Uttar Pradesh to foster warm and friendly ties between the world’s most powerful democracy and the world’s largest democratic state within a state.

Timothy further reveals that the BSP supremo had expressed an ardent desire to install the “Statue of Mayawati”, adorned with a garland of dollar bills and 1000 rupee notes to symbolize prosperity, right next to the Statue of Liberty in New York’s Liberty Island.

The American envoy said that was easily the most difficult diplomatic situation he had faced in his entire career and that he had to fall back upon the experience of his entire career to wriggle out of the delicate situation without hurting Mayawati’s feelings.

Mayawati has rubbished the disclosures and called Timothy deluded. “People know my tastes better. I prefer thousands of life-size statues dotting the landscape to a single gargantuan piece towering over the horizon. Its better aesthetics,” she said.
