PMO blocks its own Twitter account for misrepresenting the Prime Minister

Suspended for unintentional parody

After directing Twitter to shut down half a dozen handles, including @PM0India and @PMOIndiaa, for parodying and thereby “misrepresenting (sic)” the Prime Minister’s official @PMOIndia handle, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has surprised Twitterati by requesting the suspension if its own account on similar grounds.

The PMO clarified as much through the following statement:  ”The PMO wishes to inform the Twiteratti that it has issued orders to Twitter to block all parody accounts of  Dr.Manmohan Singh. In the process, we also deemed it necessary to block our own official account @PMOIndia, after realizing that we ourselves may have been guilty of misrepresenting the Prime Minister.

Over 800 tweets have been posted by us, but they are in no way reflective of the actual thoughts and inclinations of the Prime Minister, who, the truth be told, has never contributed to the content of any of these tweets, only silently signed off on them.

Also, we realized that by continuing to tweet insipid, vapid content while remaining obdurately silent on burning issues that required a clarification from the PM, we had been unwittingly parodying the PM himself.

We wish to reiterate the fact that no one is above the law of the land, not even the PMO. Hence, it is only fair that we put an end to our own misrepresentation and mocking of the PM that has been going on for a considerable period of time. Goodbye Twitter, you have been a very valued platform for us! To say that we will be back anytime soon over here would be preposterous. Any requests for our return to Twitter may be discussed on the floor of the house.

We want to end with a final notional tweet from the PM: Time has come to boost economic growth to ensure that India is not subject to….never mind.  Even we are bored of such tweets.”

While the public at large is indifferent about the suspension of the official twitter handle, the Prime Minister’s wife, Smt Gurcharan Kaur, has reacted badly. “Mannu hardly ever articulates what is going through his mind. So I used to read @PMOIndia’s tweets to at least have a faint idea of his thoughts. He Rabba, now even that mode of communication from him has been shut,” she wailed when contacted by The Unreal Times. Dr. Manmohan Singh of course refused to entertain any of our queries and silently directed us to the PMO.

One Response to PMO blocks its own Twitter account for misrepresenting the Prime Minister

  1. While BJP welcomed the decision of the Prime Minister’s office, it clarified that PMO would be back on the micro-blogging site on the very day it forms the government; the reason given was the one pertaining to misrepresentation. Party spokesperson Mr Ravi Shankar Prasad, at a press conference held in the national capital, said “The issue of the officials in the PMO misrepresenting the views of the PM is a trivial one when compared to the fact that the post of the PM itself is misrepresented, in the UPA government”.
