Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh is the latest victim of the Government’s ongoing clamp down on parody acts, right wing political discourse, and Pakistani bloggers seeking to scotch rumours in response to the exodus of North-Easterners working in the cities of Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai due to threatening SMSes.
The Government has blocked Jairam Ramesh for what it calls “his live parody act and thereby misrepresentation of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by sporting a similar hairstyle”.
The cerebral, MIT trained minister has been given 36 hours to comply with the Government’s order to alter his hairstyle or else face punitive action under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act for propagating defamatory content by sporting an Indira Gandhi bobcut.
“We also wanted to link it with public disorder but realized that would be a stretch,” said a high ranking official.
Congress insiders feel Jairam may have crossed the line with his highly insidious, albeit subtle, parody act. “It’s one thing to make fun of Dr. Manmohan Singh or even Rahul Gandhi, but no one, I repeat, no one, dare make fun of Indira Gandhi. Sonia ji holds her mother in law in high esteem and has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to jokes about Indiraji,” gasped a veteran Congress leader in disgust.
“I admit I impersonated Indiraji but not to parody her, only to come across as a ballsy guy. It was an expression of genuine admiration for the progenitor of dynastic politics and high command culture which allowed extremely cerebral back-room boys like me to rise to the top despite lacking a mass base,” Jairam said in his defense but he could not pass muster with 10, Janpath.
The Union Minister, in a bid to save his career and avoid jail, has now, with the help of The Unreal Times, generated alternate looks to stay on the right side of the law.
10, Janpath is likely to give the nod for the Mohawk look since the other two suggest right wing affiliations, according to insiders.
