As it becomes increasingly clear that Salman Khurshid’s Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust may or may not have embezzled funds amounting to no more than Rs. 70 lakh, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has asked the Union Law Minister to put in his papers for conduct unbecoming of a UPA Union Cabinet Minister by featuring in a scam that does not even breach the 1 crore mark.
“First I thought it was a 70L crore scam and there must have been a typo. I was about to send Salman a ‘good show’ message when Ahmed confirmed there was no typo and the figure was indeed only 70 lakhs. I still haven’t recovered from the cheapness of the allegations against him, yaa,” disclosed the Congress President to The Unreal Times.
“Over 14 lakh crores are annually appropriated from the Consolidated Fund of India to be spent by my various Union Ministers through various schemes, in addition to control over natural resources of the State amounting to trillions of crores. And of all the awesome things he could have done as the Union Law Minister with the power and financial outlays at his disposal, he has to get entangled in a petty scam like this. Thoo,” she hissed, disgust written all over her face.
Digvijay Singh admitted that the allegations against Khurshid could hurt the party electorally. “It’s a setback, no doubt. Our base is now questioning our competence and sophistication when it comes to malfeasance. From the heady days of the multi lakh crore 2G scam to this, the decline has been precipitous. We need to collectively introspect as to how we allowed things to come to this pass. Lot of soul-searching needs to be done,” observed Diggy with sadness.
The Congress Working Committee, the party’s highest body, convened an emergency session to take stock of the crisis and passed a unanimous resolution stating that the party had nothing to do with the ‘baby scam’, as it is now known in party circles. “Shri Khurshid’s entanglement in this scam, if it can even be called that, does not reflect the ethos of the party. The leadership is profoundly embarrassed by the cheapness of the allegations and minuscule proportions of the figures associated with it,” the resolution read.
A Congress leader admitted that this could be the end of the road for Salman Khurshid’s political career unless he redeems himself by figuring in a multi-lakh crore scam soon.
