“Sir, we found three unconscious guys on the street just outside Aqua Bar,” said the policeman into his phone. He pressed the phone harder against his ear, and walked away from the gathered crowd to make out his superior’s questions.
“Yes Sir, I informed the paramedic. He revived one of the three on the spot, and took the other two to the nearby Max hospital, where he managed to revive one more guy. We don’t have much luck with the third one yet. He stays unconscious,” he replied, and strained to hear his boss’ instructions.
“Yes Sir, the first guy seems all right. I’ll go question him now.”
The policeman slipped the phone back into his trouser pocket, and walked back towards the crowd. He made his way through the onlookers, to the bench where a youngster sat glumly, holding a bottle of drinking water.
“Theek ho?” the policeman asked him.
“Yes Sir,” he replied.
“What’s your name?”
“Karan.”
“And your friends?”
“Sebastian and Abhishek.”
“Tell me what happened.”
The youngster hesitated. “Sir…”
“Were you three doing drugs?” asked the policeman bluntly.
Karan’s eyes widened. “Nahi Sir! We were just drinking, that’s all!” His shoulders slumped, “We were playing a drinking game in the bar.”
The policeman stared at him blankly.
“It is basically a game where you are supposed to take a shot of alcohol every time some event happens. The event is decided beforehand. It’s a fun way to drink.”
“Fun? Your friend Sebastian is still unconscious. What part of this is fun?” spat the policeman.
Karan stared at his feet sullenly.
“Continue,” urged the policeman.
“Sebastian, Abhishek and I each sat in front of a TV watching a specific program. According to the rules, we were each supposed to take a shot whenever someone in the show shouted.”
“That’s so dumb. God save this country,” exclaimed the policeman. “Anyway, go on.”
“I was watching a recording of Big Boss 6,” said Karan. “I had to take quite a few shots within an hour.”
“I see.”
“Not as many as Abhishek though. He got wasted pretty quickly,” he said. “He was watching a recording of a Lok Sabha session.”
“No wonder,” replied the policeman. “What about the guy who’s still unconscious.. Sebastian… What was he watching?”
Karan shuddered. “He was watching Arnab Goswami’s Newshour.”
