In pictures: The inside story behind the banning of Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam

The past week has seen a lot of controversy, frustration and drama shrouding the release of ace actor Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus “Vishwaroopam”. Having been banned by the Tamil Nadu government due to content that is allegedly offensive to certain groups, the movie’s release has been eventually stayed by the Madras High Court after a series of flip-flops.

What actually happened that resulted in such circumstances? The UnReal Times‘ ever-dependable investigative journalist, Atul Baskarbe, brings you the inside story in pictures:

  4. How has this slip taken place? Only the Examining Committee had seen it… The film was not certified by Competent authority….When the *CBFC* granted certification then the State Government – had no power to nullify the boards dicision…. The cinematograph Act did not deal with any kind of power for pre-censorship.

He has put in his lifetime earning … investing in this Movie…. Will the State Govenment deposit Rs 100 crore till the time of the final court hearing? This is to be looked into by all the top advocates and final dicision be drawn…. no more hanging aroung the corridors of the Court Yard…. To suit the whims and fancy of any one in the State Government …. a just verdict be declared. If it is the will of God .. it will happen…. Inshaallah! The ban must be lifted and only adults to be accompanying the young lesser than Adult…. be guided and proteced till the final verdict be issued… Jai Hiind: Babs

  5. Keptan is Keptan. He is after all working hard to get one more seat than the in the last election (in the next election whenever it is scheduled) and become the Cheap Minister of Tamil Nadu. That day Tamil Nadu will be called Keptan Naadu. All kinds of baattil sarakku will be available 24/7 free of cost to all Tamils. Every citizen must become a Kudi Magan, and that is his dream – sarakku condition apply!

  6. Hmmm. Actually thought-provoking. This country is going down the drain because of the retarded politics. Have the people of a certain sect even seen the movie? Reminds me of the movie Airplane! Tagline of that movie is: The Plane’s going to Chicago. The Pilot’s going to New York. The Passengers are going to Pieces! Same case in our country.

  15. Vishwaroopam!… An entertainer of course with a social message. Kamal Hassan has definitely done a great job… though the subject has been touched umpteen number of times by movie makers across the globe. In that sense, Vishwaroopam does not give you anything new on terrorism… that we don’t know already. It is a simple story of espionage and has been executed very well. The movie has shown a lot of technical brilliance and the cinematographer has done a neat job. Background score was extremely soothing though the songs were not very appealing. The big budget used for the movie was there to be seen. However, I feel some great actors were not utilized to what they were capable of… especially Kamal and Shekar Kapur. Shekar Kapur is an extremely sensitive actor apart from being a world class director. His role was not justified in this movie for his potential.. though I enjoyed seeing him on screen after many years. This movie I recommend as a good entertainer and not as a must watch. I don’t understand the controversy on this movie. I urge to all those people to watch this movie before taking up arms against this film. Never in this movie it has portrayed Islam in poor light. The main protagonist himself being an Indian Muslim is averting a major disaster should be a statement and not leave any doubts about the message of the film. The so called keepers of the religion must understand that all Muslims are not Terrorists but all Terrorists are Muslims… in that context the movie is clean.

  18. The sad story behind the ban of the film has been narrated hilariously. It is a pity to see that a non-contravercial actor like Kamalahaasan is facing heavy mental torture because of the ban by Govt just because of a remark made by him. (I remember emergency during Indiira Gandhi’ s period.) The reasons given by Jayalalitha are not satisfactory. All my friends (including the muslims) who saw the film in Bangalore have appreciated it. It seems that there is no objectionable point in the film and muslims have been shown in good light only. There is no violenc e in Karnataka as mentioned by the CM. Now some Brahmin’s assns have shown protest about the point that brahmins have been shown as non-vegetarians. Now a days many Brahmins are eating non-veg. After seeing ur cartoon, I suspect some political interference in it. When the muslims have come to an understanding, it is painful to see that our own caste people have started some contravercy. We extend our support to Kamal an d pray for an early release of the film.

      • I am not prejudiced against any particular section. I want to see all as INDIAN (All are one), but it is government which is not allowing us to be united. Because they will loose caste votes if all become united.
