In a startling development, Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan has voluntarily sought a ban on his own movie, Chennai Express, expected to hit theaters soon. The actor’s plea, coming on the heels of the Viswaroopam ban controversy, has taken industry observers by surprise.
At a hastily arranged press conference, he said, “My name is Khan. And I’d like to ask for a ban on my own movie. I’ve thought long and hard about my recent streak, starting with Jab Tak Hain Jaan going back to Ra One. My name is Khan. And I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve been offending the sentiments of sensible people for quite some time. I’m impressed that people watched Ra One and did not lose their cool and burn the theatres down. I worry that Chennai Express may send the nation, which is pretty pissed off right now, over the edge.
So,I’d appreciate it if all state governments can invoke Section 7 of the Cinematography Act of 1955 and proactively ban the movie. I also hope that courts everywhere will file restraining orders which prohibit me from coming within 100 metres of either Anubhav Sinha or Rohit Shetty. My name is Khan.”
The announcement has sent the media into a tizzy and Times Now news anchor Arnab Goswami scored yet another coup when he managed to get Mr. Khan for an exclusive interview on the News Hour. Here are highlights of the interview:
Arnab: Shah Rukh Khan, I’m going to ask you a straight question. Why do you keep repeating “My name is Khan”? We all know that your name is Khan. That’s not news. Unless you change it to Kapoor, please stop telling us your name. Can you assure the nation that you will stop repeating your name?
SRK: Arnab, my name is.. well ok, here is the deal. I will not bring up my name unless my security cover is removed.
Arnab: Huh? Will you guarantee that you will leave the country and settle elsewhere if we do not ban your movie?
SRK: Arnab, let me put it this way. If my wish to ban Chennai Express is not honored, I swear I’ll continue to stay right here in India and start filming Ra Two.

Dear Rohit Shetty and the team of Chennai Express,
When are you guys going to grow up and realize that the stereotypes you perpetrate via your movies are much more insulting to Indians than, take for instance, the current Viswaroopam controversy. Not all “South” Indians have a large frame, are unkempt, and permanently carry tender coconuts in their hands, in the same way not all “North” Indians are fair-skinned, love Shah Rukh Khan and do Bhangra dance all day long.
Stereotypes are okay to elicit laughter, but the childish way in which the poster was designed is just plain irritating!!! With the money you spend on promotions, the least you could have done is hire a better ad agency to design posters!
All are one, show some respect!
Getting on my nerves!
