The nation woke up to news yesterday that in the wee hours of dawn, Afzal Guru had been hanged to death. The operation was so secretive that even Dr. Singh came to know about it from Twitter. What was the political calculus behind the sudden rush to execute Afzal, 11 years after deliberating on his mercy petition? Did the government do a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis?
