The Taj Hospitality group which operates the famous fine dining chain, Golden Dragon, has opened its latest restaurant on the Nkhoma border, in the Eastern Ladakh Autonomous Sector. This is the fourth Golden Dragon restaurant after Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and New York.
According to a press release, the decision was taken after yet another Chinese incursion in Ladakh. There have been 18 incursions by the Chinese Army in the last 2 months- 7 in the last 14 days alone. Each incursion party has at least 100 soldiers. That is a total of 1,800 hungry Chinese men who have crossed over into Ladakh. In an emergency meeting called by the Taj Board, it was felt that was too good a marketing opportunity to pass up.
Cyrus Mistry, the new Tata Chairman and someone who loves the Peppery Prawns at Golden Dragon, personally approved this expansion. He said given the good state of infrastructure in that area – excellent roads that enable rapid troop buildup from the Chinese side and a rail line – business prospects look good.
Both Salman Khurshid and Xi Jinpeng, the Chinese General Secretary, have also welcomed this move. As Mr Khurshid said, “Voh aa toh gaye hain lekin vaapis kaise jaayenge dekhte hain“. Sharad Pawar, who is in talks with the Oberoi Group to launch another Chinese restaurant on the Arunachal Pradesh border, said, “Since this incursion by the Chinese has become a regular feature, the Government should at least make some money.”
