In a first of its kind, the video of a smooth working session of both the houses of Indian Parliament made it to AXN’s World’s Most Amazing Videos and also went viral on YouTube. World’s Most Amazing Videos is a reality television series that showcases accidents, disasters and other extraordinary events that are caught on video camera – video of the Parliament was categorized under ‘other extraordinary events’ though some Indians wanted it to be categorized as ‘accidents’.
The Indian Parliament, for those not in the know, is a meeting place for democratically elected representatives with a mandate to recite poetry, shout slogans, make vile remarks, display latest buy-one-get-one-free offers on placards, tear apart key pieces of legislation into a precise number of pieces and most importantly promote exercise by regularly staging walk-outs. “I have never seen a reality video that had such a profound effect on me,” said Satyendra Choudhery, a young school student, who had never even heard of a non-adjourned session of the parliament.
In an extraordinary turn of events, honourable Parliamentarians were on their best behavior on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shri Rajiv Gandhi. It began with Dr. Manmohan Singh appearing in the Lok Sabha and exchanging playful shayris with Sushma Swaraj. After a few minutes, Sonia Gandhi whispered in his ear to not overdo it and directed him to clam up.
Following that, Sonia stunned the House by saying, “No family is above the law. India’s bahu should be like Ceaser’s wife – above suspicion. I will write a letter to Dr. Manmohan Singh asking him to enquire charges against Vadra and also to treat Khemka justly.”
Even Rahul Gandhi made it to the Lok Sabha for a few minutes to thank NDA for some of the good work they have done in building national highways and for being fiscally responsible during their tenure. Sushma Swaraj was seen wiping tears from her face when he said this.
P Chidambaram, who prefers a dagger in his heart than questions about his integrity, finally conceded that economy is in a dump and asked all the MPs to pray for Mukesh Ambani’s some divine intervention. “Forgive me Lord, for I know not what I am doing,” he said, reading out from the hymn sheet. Sushil Kumar Shinde gave a rousing speech on the state of security for women in India and even managed not to read out the names of all the rape victims this year.
L K Advani was sufficiently moved to announce his retirement from politics after the current Lok Sabha’s term expires. Shashi Tharoor made a brief intervention on Indian soft power in non-Shakespearean English that didn’t need translation into normal English. However, the orderly and smooth conduct took a toll on Speaker Meira Kumar who had to be hospitalized after she did not get a chance to say a single ‘baith jayiye’.
Meanwhile, extraordinary scenes of camaraderie and bonhomie in the back-benches greeted the beholder: Jaya Bachchan and Rekha happily chatting away, Sanjay Nirupam ogling at them without passing a single sexist comment, Mani Shankar Aiyer spotted smiling for a split second. Even Hamid Ansari managed not to look constipated at the mere sight of MPs.
However, the proceeding returned to normal one day later as some MPs ran into the well of the House and hurled files at the Speaker to protest against AXN resulting in the house being adjourned sine die. The Rajya Sabha was also adjourned sine die after BJP MPs demanded resignation of the Prime Minister over the leaked video.
