The Pakistan Army has emerged as the odds on favorite for clinching 2015′s best foreign film Oscar for acting against terrorism, edging out contenders such as Russia’s Leviathan and Ida from Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski. Academy members were floored after seeing footage of the Pakistan Army’s role in the war against terror since 2001.
“Very well staged and directed. General Musharraf was especially brilliant,” an Academy award member gushed after watching footage of the real life documentary drama covering the period from 9/11 to present. “And the scene in which he peers into the camera and says he is sure Osama is not in Pakistan was the most brilliant piece of method acting I have seen. Our Tom Hanks is not a patch on this fella. What’s more, he’s good at comedy too like in the scene where he blames India for the Peshawar attack.” In addition to Pakistan army grandees, the supporting cast of non-state actors such as Hafiz Saeed and the superb direction of the ISI also came in for high praise.
The Pakistan Army has also received a thumbs-up from the US State Department. “These guys are very good at what they do. Even after 13 years, we still can’t figure out when they are acting and when they aren’t. We completely support their bid to win the 2015 Oscar for best foreign film,” said Secretary of State, John Kerry. The Haqqani network’s Jalaluddin Haqqani echoed Kerry’s views. “Some of their best work was with us. I am proud to have played a key role in this fascinating drama,” Haqqani opined.
Towards the second half of the screening some members expressed doubts whether the Pakistan army was indeed acting, so good they were. However, the farcical twist in the climax where 26/11 mastermind Lakhvi is released from detention, an attempt by the ISI script writers to inject a dose of black humour, assuaged their concerns.
